Negotiating With Faith
Even if u accept that all meaning is relative and subjective, it sure doesn't feel that way. Every time we create meaning, we project it back onto the world; we still attach value to the event. So if one counts the perception of absolute, objective meaning inherent in the world as a subtle form of magical thinking, then we cant escape magical thinking. But we can make it do our bidding, by bending those meanings to our own ends. You miss the bus; is that a Bad event? Have you no choice but to feel upset? No. Quickly rewrite the script so thats it a Good event- maybe even a Purposefully Good event- because u get to enjoy the weather a bit longer or have an interesting conversation on the next bus. Then, watch the clouds and have that conversation. With enough practice, cognitive restructuring becomes an interative, almost fluid, give and take process where the best of all possible worlds seems to take shape around u move through it.
